A big Abbey Hill Academy thank you to the St James’s Place Charitable Foundation for making our dreams come true.
With their help and generosity, we plan to change a bare expanse of land which is currently unused, neglected and is unsuitable for any form of outdoor activities into a magnificent sensory garden.
Our plans include a collection of plants, hard landscaping, garden materials and water features which have been carefully selected by our staff and students and which will be laid out in such a way to appeal to the five primary senses. What distinguishes our sensory garden from a traditional garden environment is the considered inclusion of features with particular sensory qualities, with the intention of creating a stimulating and beneficial environment for our students.
The garden will include a series of zones that will take the students on a sensory journey. Students will be given the opportunity to make choices whilst on their journey and will be encouraged to anticipate the next sensory stimulus. A specially designed pathway will enable our students to travel through all the areas of the sensory garden with ease.
